One of the keys to LifeShaping is that it is experiential truth, not logical truth, which molds our lives. Scientists and astronomers once risked their lives by proclaiming that the earth was round, not flat (as was commonly believed at the time). But it took adventurers such as Leif Erickson and Christopher Columbus to leave the boundaries of the familiar, of all they knew (logical truth) and set sail into uncharted waters (experiential truth).

 

Unfortunately, no amount of logical truth can replace experiential truth, even if that experiential "truth" is actually a lie. We all have areas in our life where our experiential truth overrules our logical truth. It may be as simple as believing that we're not really capable of doing the job we are actually highly trained for. Perhaps we look in the mirror and dislike what we see, despite being well groomed, nicely dressed, etc. It's not difficult to locate those areas of our lives.

 

Permanent change to our experiential truth only comes when a "non-truth" (lie) is removed. When you remove or change the lie of the past, you redeem the emotional present! If you seek to change the present without removing the lie, you only provide a "temporary restraining order" for the resulting emotions and behaviors. It's only a matter of time until the lie overpowers the will and the cycle of defeat begins again. Despite what we've believed for so long, genuine recovery is not simply changing or controlling our surroundings, emotions and behaviors. Rather, it is freedom from the lies or misconceptions which produce and nurture those emotions and behaviors.
